A dark presence appears to inhabit an ivory mask rather than wear it, pushing through the openings and sending striped, tendril-like forms curling out from behind the face. The result feels like possession in a broader sense: one intelligence using another structure as an interface, a temporary body built to make contact with this side.

Heather True Royal does a lot of the visual work here. The blue-violet fabric slips into the open spaces of the mask and reinforces the cooler shadows, while the orange, red and electric striped forms flare forward with much more intensity. The pale face seems to hover above the shirt while the darker interior recedes behind it, giving Borrowed Face a layered, almost dimensional presence that rewards a second look.
